Facebook wants to beam the Internet from the sky

Facebook wants to beam the Internet from the sky
Facebook revealed Thursday it has a lab working on using drones, satellites and solar-powered planes to provide web access around the world.

"We've been working on ways to beam Internet to people from the sky," Facebook co-founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on the leading social network.

The team at the Connectivity Lab builds on a quest by Facebook-launched Internet.org to make access to basic online services available everywhere on the planet.

"Connecting the whole world will require inventing new technology too," Zuckerberg said.

"That's what our Connectivity Lab focuses on, and there's a lot more exciting work to do here."

The team at the lab comprises experts in aerospace and communications technology, including former members of the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research Center, according to Facebook.

And it just added talent from a Britain-based startup behind long-flying solar powered, unmanned aircraft.

The lab is looking at varying tactics to achieve its mission. For remote regions or spread-out populations, the team is interested in using satellites orbiting the Earth.

Suburban populations could be given access to Internet service from gear in planes continually circling about 20,000 meters overhead, Facebook's Yael Maguire said in a YouTube video posted by Internet.org.

The planes would fly above the weather and, powered by the sun, could remain in the sky for months at a time, according to Maguire.

The team is looking at "tying it all together" using lasers to transmit data between satellites, aircraft, or other points.

"We are just at the beginning," Maguire said. "We have some amazing people on the team and there are some awesome problems to solve."

Dubai Police who took sex as bribe from woman overstaying visa

The Dubai Appeals Court has reduced from five years to one year the prison term awarded to a policeman who was convicted of having sex with a woman in the stairwell of her building as a bribe against not arresting her for overstaying her visa.

The court also reduced the sentence of the Uzbek woman DD, 26, who offered him sex in return for not arresting her, from three years to one year in jail followed by deportation.

According to the records, Tunisian watchman MJ, 26, was surprised when a woman entered the building behind Hamarain Centre in Muraqqabat followed by a policeman in uniform as early as 5.45am.

“I asked the policeman if there is any problem and he told me there is no problem. Then I asked him whether I should accompany him. The policeman asked me to sit at my place,” MJ testified.

However, the curious watchman watched the CCTV which is connected to 16 cameras. “I saw the policeman and the woman reached the fourth floor although the woman lived on the second floor and then they entered the stairwell through the emergency door. I climbed the stairs to the third floor and I could hear and see the policeman and the woman were engaged in sex.

“I went down to the reception are and saw the policeman coming out of the lift. When he saw me, the policeman asked me about residents of two houses on the fourth floor. I told him the residents are from the Philippines. The he entered the police patrol vehicle and drove away,” testified the watchman.

The watchman noted down the number of the police patrol vehicle and then went up through the stairwell. He could see sperm stains on the floor. He notified his senior who asked him to inform the police. Police lifted the sperm residues from the floor which proved to be of that of policeman, SH, 21.The woman’s DNA was found on the policeman’s body though the sperms found on her body were not that of the policeman.

The two confessed to having consensual sex that she offered to the policeman as bribe for not arresting her for violating the UAE’s residency rules.

Woman impregnated by husband or his dad?

An 18-year-old Egyptian woman who became pregnant told police she does not know whether the baby’s father is her husband or his father, who had raped her.

The woman from the northern Egyptian town of Kafr Al Shaikh said her husband’s father had forced her to have sex with him for nearly two years with her husband’s consent.

She said the big man had beaten her up many times and when she asked her husband to force his father to stop raping her, he also beat her up.

“The woman said she became pregnant but she does not know whether the baby’s father is her husband or his father,” newspapers said, quoting a police spokesman, who added that the husband’s father had been arrested on rape charges.

Missing Malaysian plane: 7 pings and satellite 'handshake'… Final proof MH370 crashed in sea?

Brazil's Navy sailors recover debris from the missing Air France Flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean. Geoff Dell, discipline leader of accident investigation at Central Queensland University, said if the black boxes of a missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 were several kilometers (miles) deep, ships might need to be almost directly over them before the signal could detect them. (AFP)
Britain's Inmarsat used a wave phenomenon discovered in the nineteenth century to analyse the seven pings its satellite picked up from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 to determine its final destination.

The new findings led Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to conclude on Monday that the Boeing 777, which disappeared more than two weeks ago, crashed thousands of miles away in the southern Indian Ocean, killing all 239 people on board.

The pings, automatically transmitted every hour from the aircraft after the rest of its communications systems had stopped, indicated it continued flying for hours after it disappeared from its flight path from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

From the time the signals took to reach the satellite and the angle of elevation, Inmarsat was able to provide two arcs, one north and one south that the aircraft could have taken.

Inmarsat's scientists then interrogated the faint pings using a technique based on the Doppler effect, which describes how a wave changes frequency relative to the movement of an observer, in this case the satellite, a spokesman said.

Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch was also involved in the analysis.

The Doppler effect is why the sound of a police car siren changes as it approaches and then overtakes an observer.

"We then took the data we had from the aircraft and plotted it against the two tracks, and it came out as following the southern track," Jonathan Sinnatt, head of corporate communications at Inmarsat, said.

The company then compared its theoretical flight path with data received from Boeing 777s it knew had flown the same route, he said, and it matched exactly.

The findings were passed to another satellite company to check, he said, before being released to investigators on Monday.

The paucity of data - only faint pings received by a single satellite every hour or so - meant techniques like triangulation using a number of satellites or GPS (Global Positioning System) could not be used to determine the aircraft's flight path.

KEEPING TRACK

Stephen Wood, CEO of All Source Analysis, a satellite analytic firm, said it seemed that the investigators had narrowed down the area substantially. "But it's still a big area that they have to search," he said.

The incident is likely to spur a review of aviation rules, especially related to communications equipment and the ability to turn off a plane's transponder, he added.

But it is too early to say what that would entail because it remains unknown what caused the plane to divert from its original course.

"This type of incident will cause everyone who flies airplanes commercially with passengers to be really pressed for a whole new line of ways to keep track of their precious cargo," said Wood, a former U.S. intelligence officer who headed the analysis unit of DigitalGlobe Inc, a satellite imagery firm, until July 2013.

Inmarsat said for a relatively low cost its satellites could keep tabs on flights and provide the data exchanged between the air and the ground to help organise routes to save time and fuel.

Its systems, which are widely used in shipping, have been embedded into surveillance and communications technologies that allow air traffic controllers to build up a picture of where aircraft are, and to better manage routes.

"If you have that (...) capability you get a preferred routing at the right altitude that makes your aircraft more fuel efficient, but if you don't have it you have to fly lower and get less priority in air-traffic control," he said.

The system is used in planes in the North Atlantic, Inmarsat's vice-president for aeronautics, David Coiley, told Reuters earlier this month, but it is not commonly used in all parts of the world.

Sinnatt said on Monday that such a facility would cost about $10 per flight. "It is something we have been pushing the industry to do because it significantly adds to safety," he said. Other satellite providers are also developing tracking systems.

Husband sues overweight wife for divorce

An employee is suing his wife for divorce as she is too heavy and her 115-kilogramme weight has affected their sex life.
The man said in his divorce lawsuit that his wife suffered numerous diseases since she became overweight and he could not have sex with her due to her bad health condition.
Meanwhile, Dubai court sources told Gulf News that the woman is the one, who lodged a divorce lawsuit first. She approached Dubai Courts Department early this month seeking divorce.
The wife alleged in her lawsuit that the man ignored her and failed to do his matrimonial responsibilities.
The surprised husband, thereafter, lodged a counter lawsuit and sought divorce after attempts to reach an amicable settlement between them failed. The man refuted the woman’s claims that he is a bad husband and irresponsible and constantly ignored her.
His lawsuit says,“She sleeps longer hours, wakes up at middays and spends most of her time watching television shows and series. She neglected our child and me as well[…].”
The husband also claimed that the wife forced him to take an appointment whenever he wanted to have sex with her.
“She is the one who left home without prior notice early last year. When she walked out of home she cursed me and my family… and particularly my mother. She took all her belongings and never returned,” the husband mentioned in his lawsuit.
A ruling is expected soon.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT DUBAI

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT DUBAI
With year-round sunshine, intriguing deserts, beautiful beaches, luxurious hotels and shopping malls, fascinating heritage attractions and a thriving business community, Dubai receives millions of leisure and business visitors each year from around the world. These visitors can benefit from a range of services and a local infrastructure that help make any trip to Dubai smooth and hassle-free.

Dubai has a warm, sunny climate that is ideal for tourism, with mild temperatures for most of the year and a low rainfall. Summer temperatures in July and August can reach highs of around 45ºC (113ºF) with high humidity, making this the least comfortable time of year to visit in terms of climate. However, Dubai is well geared up for high temperatures, and public transport, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions are all air conditioned.

English is widely spoken in Dubai, and as all restaurant menus, road signs and other information is usually presented in both English and Arabic, visitors who speak English will have no trouble making their way around. Many tour operators and travel professionals will also be able to offer services to French, Russian and German speaking visitors.

The local currency is the dirham, which is pegged to the dollar at Dhs 3.67. Dubai offers a sophisticated network of banks, currency exchanges and ATMs, making it easy to access money across the city.

Dubai is tolerant and cosmopolitan and all visitors are welcome. However, Islam is a way of life in the city, and therefore tourists should adopt a certain level of cultural and religious sensitivity for the duration of their stay. While dress codes are fairly liberal, swim wear should only be worn on beaches or at swimming pools, and when visiting shopping malls and other attractions, tourists should wear clothing that is not too tight or revealing. Certain attractions, such as mosques or religious sites, usually have stricter dress codes, requiring both men and women to cover up bare shoulders, arms and legs, and women to wear headscarves.

Despite being governed by Islamic laws, alcohol is available to tourists in licensed bars and restaurants (these are almost always located inside four and five star hotels), and in airport duty free shops. Drinking in public places (such as beaches) is not permitted, and being drunk and disorderly in public can result in stiff penalties.
